Mobile recycling van returns to Stirchley in July

Birmingham City Council’s Mobile Household Recycling Centre is returning to Stirchley, in the Morrisons car park on Friday 15th July from 7am – noon.

For those who might need to visit the tip but haven’t made an appointment or don’t have appropriate transport, this is a chance to get rid of some extra items.

The van is due to be in the car park of the Stirchley Morrisons, towards the back (think Bond St rather than Umberslade). Refuse Management staff from Lifford Lane tip will be on hand to help ensure your items go in the right bins.

CAN BE RECYCLED: Recycle any household rubbish that cannot be reused; standard recycling materials that usually go in your recycling; garden waste; bigger items like toys or small household items. Batteries, lightbulbs, small electronics etc can be recycled.

NOT ACCEPTED: Building materials, white goods (like fridges), hazardous materials and larger items will not be accepted.

Leaf Creative Arts & Stirchley School banner

Join Leaf Creative Arts at Stirchley Baths on Saturday 16th July for the unveiling of the Birmingham Commonwealth Games banner made by Leaf participants and pupils from Stirchley School.

The team will be in the courtyard at the back of the Library / side of the Baths from 11am – 1pm. As part of the day, it will also include a steel pan drumming workshop with Norman Stewart, bhangra dancing, games and photography station by Picture This Media CIC. The event is free and open to all ages.

The banner was funded as part of the Celebrating Communities fund, assembled by Birmingham City Council to maximise the benefits and legacy of being the Proud Host City for the Commonwealth Games. Funds totalling more than £1.4million have been given to 320 projects across all 69 of the city’s wards through.

June’s Forum meeting and update from Councillor

It is that time of the month again. Here is the notice for the June Forum meeting which will be in person in Stirchley Community Church and online via Zoom.

    The next Stirchley Forum meeting will be on Monday 11th July 2022.

Councillor Mary Locke has sent her apologies for not being present at the meeting. She has requested if there are any questions, please email her, or the Forum (who will pass on the message). She has provided the following updates from previous meetings.

  • Enterprise still issues re parking I believe they have secured parking opposite near Balti Hut this will cause issues for flats above shops and businesses 
  • Wickes and parking this has been resolved 
  • Lyndworth cricket club:  it appears part of Seven Capital called Seven Homes are pursuing this. Earlier letters went to residents of Lyndworth road in regards to compulsory purchase.  It appears two are interested others not. The club have to find new play area in city that is bring pursue with Sport England.
  • Aldi site is progressing well 
  • Cooperative housing development also will be progressing soon also 
  • Jubilee Events: The events I attended here during Jubilee bank holiday were excellent Ascension church, Pitleasow close, stirchleycircle22 afternoon tea was excellent thank you to all who organised and the hard work involved 
  • Councillor advice surgeries will begin again on first Friday of month at Stirchley baths 10:30 -12 noon. Plus Third Saturday of month at Ascension Church on Pineapple Grove from 10:30-11:30
  • Mobile recycling centre 17th June Pineapple Road, opposite Ascension church Pineapple Grove 7am until 12 noon 
  • Mary’s councillor-led ward meeting is on 6th July at Stirchley baths 7pm  

Trees along the River Rea, Stirchley

We have received a note from Councillor Mary Locke about upcoming works to some of trees along the River Rea route in Stirchley.

The next phase of River Rea improvement is due to start on Monday 14th March 2022. Work will take about two days.

Work will be coppicing and pollarding the mature crack willows, that are adjacent to the bridge from Hunts Road to Hazelwell Park. Willows are weak species and can fail as they reach maturity. They crack and fall into river as has happened near the footbridge and along cycle path and up to Dacer Close.  Through to Canon Hill Park. 

Coppicing will leave stump above ground level; the remaining stumps are left will regenerate shoots that provide a habitat for small animals and birds.

The aim of the scheme is to enhance the appearance safety of the River Rea corridor

The project will commence again in September/October 2022 after the bird nesting season

The Mobile Household Recycling Centre (MHRC) will be visiting Stirchley again on Friday 11th March at the car park in Morrisons (at the back near the permanent recycling bins, towards the corner or Ribblesdale Rd and Bond St) from 7am until 12 noon.

The mobile van is a chance for residents of the ward (and neighbouring wards) to dispose of any items without having to take a trip to the tip – and can be accessed without the use of a car. The MHRC features three vehicles: a regular refuse collection vehicle for waste with no other use; a van for taking away items that can be reused by charities; and a wagon with multiple compartments for recycling by material type.
