Building Pineapple Road station due to start

Building the new Pineapple Road station is due to start this week.

Contractors VolkerFitzpatrick will begin work on 22nd October for up to 6 weeks. This will enable them to remove some vegetation and trees, as needed, and set up a site compound. Most of the work will take place during standard working hours (Monday to Friday, 7.30am to 5.30pm), but there will be some weekend and night-time works due to safety reasons.

VolkerFitzpatrick will also be setting up the main site compound in Stirchley on the corner of Pineapple Road and Cartland Road. Work to set up the compound will include temporarily widening the King Edward VI School gates and installing temporary cabins and hoarding. Once the new station has been built, the compound will be removed.

Vegetation and tree removal will take place along the railway line, and in the grass area between Pineapple Road and Cartland Road. West Midlands Rail Exec will be working closely with Birmingham City Council to replant trees.

Out of hours work is due to take place along Cartland Road from Saturday 22nd October to Friday 18th November and out of hours work along the railway line is due to take place on
Saturday to Sundays from 22nd October to 27th November.

Works have been have carefully planned out work to reduce disruptions. Measures will be in place to monitor and reduce any noise. Task lighting will be directed away from neighbouring areas.

Traffic management will be in place on Pineapple and Cartland Road during some of these works. Expect noise from machinery and equipment, including excavators and dumpers, road pavers and rollers as well as smaller handheld tools.

Pineapple train station ground investigation work

Work on the new Pineapple Road station will be starting ground investigation works from 2 July
for up to 11 weeks.

The ground investigations (for example, borehole drilling) will be carried by contractor VolkerFitzpatrick. They will inform the next stage of the station design and ensure Pineapple Rd station can be built safely.

The majority of the work will take place during standard working hours: Monday to Friday, 07.30am to 5.30pm. But to ensure the safety of workers some work will need to take place on weekends and at night-time when the railway line is closed.

Out of hours work is due to take place on the following weekends from 9pm Saturday to 2pm Sunday:

  • Saturday 2 to Sunday 3 July
  • Saturday 9 to Sunday 10 July
  • Saturday 16 to Sunday 17 July
  • Saturday 23 to Sunday 24 July

Work has been planned carefully to reduce disruptions. Measures will be in place by West Midlands Rail Exec (WMRE) to monitor and reduce any noise. Task lighting will be directed away from neighbouring areas.

To access certain survey areas safely they will need to remove some vegetation. WMRE are working closely with an ecologist throughout the process and will only be removing vegetation if absolutely necessary.

From 4th June 2022 work will start to prepare for the new Hazelwell / Pineapple Road / Stirchley station.

West Midlands Rail Executive (WMRE) have advised the majority of the work will take place during standard working hours: Monday to Friday, 07.30am – 5.30pm. To ensure the safety of workers some work will need to take place on weekends and at night-time when the railway line is closed.

Out of hours work is due to take place:

  • 9pm on Saturday 4 June to 2pm on Sunday 5 June
  • 0.01am to 5.30am each morning from Tuesday 7 toFriday 10 June
  • 9pm on Saturday 11 June to 2pm on Sunday 12 June
  • 9pm on Saturday 18 June to 2pm on Sunday 19 June
  • 9pm on Saturday 25 June to 2pm on Sunday 26 June

Notice of works have been sent to residents in Pineapple, Cartland, Priory and Avebury Roads as well as Bloomsbury, Avebury and Spa Groves, as they may be impacted by the works. WMRE has said to expect noise from equipment, including chainsaws and strimmers. However, they will keep disruption to a minimum, minimising night-time working, noise and light pollution. Measures will be in place to monitor and reduce any noise. Task lighting will be directed away from neighbouring areas. T

The first stage of work will be carrying out surveys to inform the detailed design of the station. This will take approximately four weeks.

Help name the new station

Do you want to help decide what the new train station should be called?

West Midlands Rail Exec (WMRE) are calling on residents to take part in a survey to decide the names of two of the new stations, one in Moseley and the other in Stirchley.

From the 11 – 25th May, the public can choose their preferred name for the station by visiting the WMRE website. For the new station in the Stirchley Ward, the choice is between three options: the previous name of the station that closed in 1941, Hazelwell; Pineapple Road, where the station will be located; or Stirchley, the council borough where most of the station resides.

You are invited to the next Stirchley Ward meeting that is taking place as an in-person meeting on Monday 7th March, at 7pm, at Stirchley Baths Community Hub, 2-4 Bournville Lane, B30 2JT.

Please note this is not a Neighbourhood Forum meeting, rather one organised by the Stirchley Councillor, Mary Locke. The Stirchley Neighbourhood Forum meeting will take place as normal on Monday 14th March, this is a council-led meeting and a chance to hear from the councillor as well as updates from council officers.
